Over the years, Saudi Mechanical
Industries (SMi) has grown from its
humble beginnings as an assembler of
vertical turbine pump components for supply to the local agricultural and oil
& gas sectors, to become an industrial
powerhouse within the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia. Today, it’s 100% Saudi owned
and adds value at each stage of the
manufacturing chain. Raw materials such
as scrap metal and sand are sourced
from the local market and are processed
to create high quality engineered
components and assemblies that are
sold throughout the Kingdom and
By systematically adding upstream
operations as the years progressed, SMi
not only ensured complete control of the
manufacturing process from start to finish
but also became so proficient at it that
it now exports about 60% of its current
output to Europe and North America.
The company employs a number of cutting edge technologies to stay a head of the
game, the most prominent being a “state of the art” Disamatic greensand foundry
facility, 5-axis CNC machining centers, modern co-ordinate measuring machines
and an independently control gauge room. In addition, operational improvement
is strived for continuously through daily shop floor meetings, training in lean
manufacturing techniques and formation of continuous improvement teams. The
issues most commonly addressed relate to improvements in quality, manufacturing
efficiency and ever shorter delivery times. Right first time, on time, every time!
At the moment, the company is entering a new and exciting period of diversification.
Projects that focus on valve and pump manufacture for the local oil and gas
industries as well as supply of engineered components and sub-assemblies to
the armed forces and railway sectors have already been initiated in line with the
country’s Vision 2030. Also, recent investments in a large, horizontal CNC milling
machine (capacity 10t), a portable laser scanner and a 3-D printer of furan bonded
sand molds and cores has made SMi more versatile than ever. It’s now possible to
deliver a sample part or assembly in under one month from receipt of customer
order; something that was impossible just months ago.
The continued investment in human capital, new manufacturing technologies and
control of the complete production chain allow us to satisfy the ever more stringent
demands of our existing customers, attract new custom and penetrate markets,
previously unreachable, that will support and ultimately replace the markets that we
have been in over the past 3 decades.
